Mission Statement
The Counseling Center provides high quality, confidential counseling designed to help students learn how to meet their intellectual, interpersonal, and developmental goals. Our programs and services aim to promote a healthy, equitable, and positive campus community. The Counseling Center staff provides crisis intervention and offers consultation on matters related to student development and psychological well being. All services are conducted in a manner that is positive, empowering and respectful of the diversity of the Lafayette community.
What to Expect at your First Counseling Session
During your first appointment, you will be asked to complete a confidential
form that asks you to give us some background information about you and
your family as well as to describe the reasons for seeking counseling.
When you meet with your counselor, he or she will likely review the information
on the form and ask you to describe more fully your reasons for seeking
counseling. Some students are very clear about why they have come to see
a counselor while others are not as sure. You and your counselor can use
the first meeting to clarify your goals and to begin to identify some possible
ways to achieve these goals. At the end of the first session, you and your
counselor will decide together whether or not you would like to arrange
another session.
The staff at the Counseling Center conduct primarily short-term psychotherapy.
If your concerns are such that you need assistance for a longer period
of time, your counselor will assist you in finding an appropriate mental
health provider off-campus.
