Students participate in a wide variety of sports. A separate handbook,
including entry deadlines and competition details, is published each year
for captains and chairpersons.
For dates and times of each sport, please refer to the intramural schedule.
Intramural Sports History
Twenty male and female intramural directors from 11 historically black colleges formed the National Intramural Association (NIA) at the first intramural conference held at Dillard University in New Orleans in 1950. Two years later, white intramural directors were invited to attend the Third Annual Conference at Howard University.
Within the next few years the participation of women in NIA was
voluntarily abated. With the passage of a constitutional revision in 1971
the acceptance of women as members of NIA was once again possible.
In 1975, the organization was renamed National Intramural-Recreational
Sports Association.
Lafayette, which has been an institutional member for 19 years, is one of 705 colleges and universities currently affiliated with NIRSA.
The aim of the intramural sports program is to provide each individual with the opportunity to participate in his/her favorite type of competition, and to explore and enjoy new or untried sport activities. Each year, we add several new events as a means to attract new people to the program. There is an opportunity for every individual to participate no matter what the level of ability. You are encouraged to sample several of the activities so as to discover the ones that you enjoy and will continue to pursue later in life. The Intramural Sports Program emphasizes and rewards values such as sportsmanship and broad participation and leadership. There is something for everyone!
