From Lafayette's founding in 1826 the College has prohibited discrimination on grounds of religion. Since 1854, however, the College has enjoyed an historic association with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), while welcoming persons of all, or no, religious traditions. The spectrum of religious organizations on campus includes Lafayette Christian Fellowship,
Newman Association, Hillel Society, The Journey, Muslim Students Association, Orthodox Christian Fellowship and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Students are also warmly welcomed by places of worship of many denominations in the Easton area.
The Office of Religious Life includes the Director of Religious Life/Chaplain of the College, as well as Catholic and Jewish chaplains working together to coordinate all religious activities. Both the Hillel Society (Jewish) and the Newman Association (Catholic) maintain houses on the campus where students gather for meals and discussions. Each of the chaplains is available for counseling.
The Office of Religious Life sponsors occasional "brown bag" luncheon discussions, addressing issues of current concern locally and globally. Weekly worship in the Jewish, Muslim, and Christian traditions is held on campus. Interfaith events are held each year including an Interfaith Seder, a joint Iftar/Diwali celebration, and a December holiday luncheon. Lafayette is well aware that it is one community with many faith traditions, and those who work and learn here seek to foster interfaith understanding and celebration.
