I have always loved chemistry—the
way it explains the natural world both qualitatively and quantitatively.
And the chemistry program at Lafayette has given me the opportunity
to not only learn more about the physical manifestations of science,
but also to complete and present hands-on research. Yet, my Lafayette
experience is so much more than my intellectual pursuits. I have
found and pursued multifarious opportunities to explore my other
interests!
My ultimate career goal
is to become a medical doctor, so during my sophomore year, I
took an Emergency Medical Technician Certification course through
the local community college and have been running with the Easton
Emergency Squad ever since. This experience has allowed me to
develop an understanding of patient care while aiding those in
need of medical help. I also completed a medical internship with
an alumnus in order to explore the world of pediatrics—a
suburban pediatric practice, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, well-baby
nursery, and inner-city family clinic. During a short trip abroad
to London, I served as a student play specialist on a cystic fibrosis
ward, where I provided fun and diversionary play to children as
part of their holistic care regime.
During my time at Lafayette,
I have also managed to catch the travel bug. In addition to my
London trip, I spent a semester at the University of Technology-Sydney,
Australia, where I immersed myself in another culture and lifestyle.
It was an amazing personal growth experience to traverse the world
alone, and I benefited from it greatly. I spent another semester
in Washington, D.C., through American University’s experiential
learning program. I completed an internship as well as a seminar
in law enforcement. I was able to hear from experts in many fields
including incarceration, forensic science, gun control, corruption,
and more. Although the program was geared toward the liberal arts,
it certainly tied in to my chemistry laboratory experience and
my interest in public health.
The Landis Community
Outreach Center has provided a great outlet for me bridging the
Lafayette community with the greater Easton community. A member
of the Landis staff, I am responsible for running the Meals at
Third Street program. Each week, a group of students travels down
to this shelter to cook dinner for and socialize with the residents.
It is an eye-opening experience—just as the rest of my Lafayette
experience has been—demonstrating new facets of the world
and pushing me to learn not only about academics but about myself
as well.
