Ashlee Snyder

I came to Lafayette with ambitions of tackling not only the sciences but the arts as well. From day one, my motives and abilities were questioned. What a surprise it was to encounter a music major in physics and organic chemistry or a neuroscience major in music theory. It wasn’t until I explained my goals and ambitions that people understood. Till this day people remain surprised at my unique interests and passions, and it is Lafayette that has given me the opportunity to successfully prepare to tackle my career objectives in the future.

Lafayette has not only provided a vigorous scientific foundation for a prospective medical doctor to build upon but also a supportive cultural arts environment as well. Perhaps the deciding factor for me in choosing an undergraduate institution was the ability to receive not only a degree in science but in music as well. What surprised my professors even more was the fact that, unlike many dual-degree students, I plan on using both of my majors as an entertainment specialist. My plans include attending medical school this coming fall and pursuing a residency in ENT, followed by a fellowship in vocal and musical medicine.

‘I want to work with the stars’ my parents always say. Lafayette has provided with academic measures as well as social and artistic opportunities including Residence Hall Council, Lafayette College Choir, and Soulfege (coed a cappella group).

I have been able to pursue my interests in education by being a chemistry teaching assistant, First-Year Student Orientation leader, and peer tutor for biology, chemistry, physics, and music. Finally, Lafayette has provided me with some of the best opportunities to learn through externships and research. I participated in a research internship at Lehigh Valley Family Practice, an organic chemistry independent study with Professor William Miles, and am completing a senior honors thesis on the use of music therapy with oncology patients.
