From the Archives: A silk scarf commemorated the Marquis de Lafayette’s 1824 tour of America

In August 1824, the Marquis de Lafayette returned to tour America for 13 months. Upon arrival in New York harbor, his return sparked four nonstop days of celebration in the form of parades, dinners, and balls held in his honor. Special Collections & College Archives holds this silk scarf bearing the greeting “Welcome Lafayette,” which was worn during the Philadelphia celebrations of Lafayette’s return.
